Cyprus has an open free market economy. The overwhelming majority of the 710,000 population have Greek as a mother tongue, most of the rest Turkish. English is widely spoken, along with French and German in hotels and many shops. The mainstay of the Cypriot economy is tourism, which grew spectacularly in the second half of the 20th century, taking its share of the upsurge in world tourism, and now represents about 20% of gross domestic product. The Cyprus Marine Commerce and Industry Association was formed in 1999 and has 30 companies as full members. Active in legislative issues regarding the boating industry, it offers legal, marketing and training support to the members and is affiliated to the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
