ICOMIA publishes Global Conformity Guidelines for Man Overboard Prevention and Capacity

Thursday, June 9, 2011

ICOMIA has now published its sixth and seventh Global Conformity Guideline for construction standards. The purpose of the guidelines is to assist boat builders who comply with either ABYC or ISO, but are looking to start exporting to countries using the opposite system. Guideline Number 6 covers Man Overboard Prevention and Guideline Number 7 Builder’s Plate/Capacity Labels.

While the Guideline on MOB Prevention lists additional requirements in two annexes, there are different approaches in both ISO and ABYC Builder’s Plate/Capacity requirements. The Guideline therefore provides a number of suggested combined labels.

This initiative has involved ABYC, BMF, NMMA, IMCI and ICOMIA. It is planned to address differences with other national standards in due course. Next documents will be produced for Ventilation and Portable Fuel Systems and compare Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupters (ELCI) to Residual Current Devices (RCD).

In due course ICOMIA hopes to resolve the differences between the standards by merging as many requirements as possible in the ISO Standards and achieve one global technical specification.
